He’s My Brother She’s My Sister is Coming to the Mews
Tomorrow night, rock & roll band, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister (HMBSMS), will take the stage at the Vaudeville Mews. HMBSMS is getting ready to release a new full-length album in spring 2012, and spent the greater part of 2011 touring with acts, such as Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, The Blow and The Devil Makes Three.
The band has a super authentic, folky Southern sound and is made up of five members, including co-lead singer siblings, a full-body percussionist (think tapshoes on hardwood foors), a cellist and a guitarist.
Co-lead singer, Rob Kolar, sent a quick interview from the road…
LB: How has HMBSMS’ style evolved since touring with various artists?
RK: Initially our band was an acoustic duo. Now that we have gathered a colorful array of musicians and sounds the energy has evolved into a much more exciting hip-shaking and sing along experience. We try to incorporate elements of western music, mississippi and Chicago blues, hints of early 70′s UK glam, modern indie rock, good old time rock and roll, and some countrified rockabilly. Every band and show inevitably has some influence on us, but the ones that seem to stand out to me are Spindrift, The Growlers, Alexander and The Magnetic Zeroes, Devil Makes Three, Henry Wolfe, Jenny O, and Las Cafeteras.
Traveling through Louisiana and other parts of the south, as well as the Pacific Northwest, and playing festivals like High Sierra and Nacarubi have also had some profound effects on the spirit of the band.
LB: Do you have any lucky talismans that you incorporate into each show’s outfit or performance?
RK: Rachel has so many talismans the queen of England would be jealous. She gave me a wand for a present. I am fond of tarot reading – that can sometimes bring a lot of clarity to a situation.
LB: Who’s your style idol?
RK: There are several. I aim to combine elements of Marc Bolan and early glam looks, tastes of Tim Burton, a bit of western flair ala Johnny Cash, and the psychedelic nuances of Hendrix or Cream. I guess there is a bit of vaudeville and circus sideshow somewhere in there.
As far as a masterful genius in style, I would have to say David Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust era really blew people’s minds, and still feels cutting edge and groundbreaking today. He was innovative and helped question the idea of male and female, as well as human and extraterrestrial.
LB: Where is the first place you look for inspiration when planning your tour outfits?
RK: We definitely have some favorite stores in LA, and love thrifting and vintage shopping on the road. A few I have had some great luck at are Jetrag, Squaresville and Ozzie Dots in LA.
